<p>Hop Brook Lake is spread over three communities in New Haven County, Connecticut, United States. These communities are Naugatuck, Middlebury, and Waterbury. A dam was created across Hop Brook in Naugatuck and the lake that was created is known as Hop Brook Lake.</p><br>
<h2>Construction</h2><br>
<p>Construction of the dam commenced in December 1965 and was completed in December 1968, costing $6.2 million. The relocation of 1.8 mi of Route 63 was required. The project includes an earthfill dam with stone slope protection 520 ft long and 97 ft high; an earthfill dike measuring 400 ft long and 33 ft high; a gated rectangular 425 ft-long concrete conduit three feet wide and five feet high; and a chute spillway edged in rock with a 200-footlong broad-crested weir. The weir&#39;s crest elevation is 17 ft lower than the top of the dam.</p><br>
<p>The flood storage area of the project, which is normally empty and is only utilized to store floodwaters, is 1.5 mi long and spreads out over 270 acre. The project and associated lands total 553 acre throughout Naugatuck, Middlebury, and Waterbury. Hop Brook Lake can store up to 2.23 e9USgal of water for flood control purposes. This is equivalent to eight inches (203 mm) of water covering its drainage area of 16.4 square miles.</p><br>
<h2>Recreation</h2><br>
<p>Hop Brook Lake contains a 21 acre recreation pool that has a maximum depth of 18 ft.</p><br>
<p>Hop Brook Lake contains largemouth bass and panfish. The state stocks both the lake and its feeder streams with trout. Recreational development of the reservoir includes picnic sites, walking trails, a beach, ball field, drinking water, and sanitary and parking facilities.</p><br>
<p>There have been multiple incidents of drowning at Hop Brook Lake.</p><br>
<h2>Park Rangers</h2><br>
<p>Hop Brook Lake is controlled by the Army Corps of Engineers.</p><br>
<p>Pikillaqta , "flea place", also spelled Piki Llacta, Pikillacta, Piquillacta, Piquillaqta) is a large Wari culture archaeological site 20 km east of Cusco in the Quispicanchi Province.</p><br>
<p>Pikillaqta is a village of the Wari people. Wari was the center village and other cities like Pikillaqta were influenced from it. The Wari also inhabited many other sites around the area. The site was occupied from about 550 to 1100AD. Its main use was for ceremonies and the site was not complete when it was abandoned.</p><br>
<h2>Geography and environment</h2><br>
<p>The Pikillaqta site is located in low ridges in the eastern Valley of Cuzco. (McEwan 2005:29) The area is hilly with no rivers, but small lakes are located near the city. The area is grassy, rocky, and sandy where the buildings were built. The site is 3,250 meters above sea level and is in the Lucre Basin. The climate in the area of Pikillaqta is cold and dry. Mid April through October is the dry season. November starts the wet season and the weather is milder and that goes until mid April. The average temperature high is in the 60’s and the average temperature low is in the 30’s and 40’s year round in the Valley of Cusco. The rainfall averages 11.5 inches a month in the wet season and 4.2 inches a month in the dry season.</p><br>
<h2>History of excavations</h2><br>
<p>Luis Valcarcel discovered the site of Pikillaqta in 1927. (McEwan 2005:20) Extensive research was not done, Valcarcel just focused on the findings of two green-stoned figurines and his findings were not published until years later. Emilio Harth-Terre was next and published the ground plans of the site in 1959 but did not excavate. William Sanders looked at the surface remains of the architecture in the 1960s and split the site into more detailed proportions. He searched two buildings and only found a few artifacts. Mary Glowacki studied the site for ceramics in 1996. The biggest and most in depth research however was done by Gordon McEwan who excavated the site in 1978-79, 1981–82, and 1989–90. This is when the bulk of the material and questions about the site were finally being answered. In the 1989-90 excavation extensive research was done on the architecture and on trash middens. McEwan divided site into 4 sectors to research them more easily.</p><br>
<h2>Agriculture and canal systems</h2><br>
<p>Maize was found in one of the excavations done by McEwan along with 20 well conserved beans. Maize was an important crop and was farmed by the people of Pikillaqta as a major food source. The Lucre Basin could produce this crop with all the irrigation systems. Maize was important to the Wari and was painted on pottery along with deities and supernaturals. Canals, reservoirs, aqueducts were at Pikillaqta along with terraces and cultivated fields. Pikillaqta economically controlled the area through agriculture. There was a hydraulic network in Pikillaqta that led through canals and agriculture fields to help the people. Water for irrigation was brought in mainly by the rainfall, which leads to the hydraulic system. August through December there was hardly any rain and the artificial irrigation system was used. December through January there was plenty of rain and artificial irrigation was not used much. May through June was the harvest season and irrigation was used when it was needed. Canals were built of stone and were connected to the Lucre River and Chelke stream. There is over 48 thousand meters of canal in the system with canal A and Canal B being the longest and connected to Pikillaqta. Canal A provided water for irrigation at terraces 1, 2, 3, and 4 and was connected to aqueducts. Canal A provided for the most important buildings in the center of Pikillaqta. All these devices aided in crop production and provided the people with water. In one unit of the trash middens two grinding stones were found and this was a rare find because of the scarce ground artifacts found at the site. This showed food was ground and prepared with grinding stones and they must have been around to help with food preparation.</p><br>
<p>In the trash middens at Pikillaqta 50,00 bones were found. Most of them were Camelid bones, with guinea pig and other small rodent bones found. Not much research has been done on them McEwan stated but this is some of the animals that were eaten at the site. Projectile points were found in the middens as well which could have been the tool to kill and prepare the animals. This was probably the meat sources for the people at Pikillaqta along with the maize.</p><br>
<h2>Functions of site</h2><br>
<p>Pikillaqta may have been a large feasting site. There was a large patio in the middle of the architectural structure that probably was the center of the administrative rituals and religious practices. Rulers and their kin would come together and feast and drink, and with the capacity of the patio, Pikillaqta could hold a ceremony for people from other Wari villages. Great amounts of native beer (chicha) was drank. Maize and chicha were very important in rituals, they were sacred so they appeared often in ceremonies. Even though the patio was the main function of the ceremonies, other places of Pikillaqta show some important ceremonial use. Niched halls were important religious buildings also.(McEwan 2005:152) There were 18 of these structures. The halls were looted but they may have held sacred objects and offerings once. In Wari art, ceremonies were depicted with a ceremonial pole coming out of the center of niched halls along with offerings, plants, and felines shown in a sacred context. The functions of the niched halls then were probably ceremonially and ritually used because the halls match up with other Wari sites and art. Small conjoint buildings were also present at the site for ritual use.(McEwan 2005:158) There were 501 structures of these rooms. A small number of people could gather here for ritual feasting on a smaller more private scale. Sector four of the small conjoint buildings could have been a place where mummies were held and visited. Small fire hearths were found in them where offerings to the deceased could have been done. The Wari thought it was important to keep in touch with the mummies so they could watch over the living so they were regularly visited. There were four chambers included in the small conjoint rooms and one contained a large stone that the Wari couldn&#39;t move. They built their structure around this and the rock was than probably used as a sacred object.</p><br>
<h2>Leadership and religion</h2><br>
<p>There was no distinct evidence that showed inequality at the site of Pikillaqta but there were probably different classes. People of higher power and prestige would have been needed to watch over and control the events and ceremonies of the large-scale site. Evidence form other Wari sites would insist that elites or leaders would have held everything in check and working order. Kinship was important for the Wari. Many decisions and ceremonies were revolved around fictive kinship and ancestor worship. The main Wari deity in Wari religion was Waricocha. Waricocha was the "staff god" who controlled life and death. He was the creator of all things, the universe, sun, moon, and civilization. On pottery and in art Waricocha was shown with rods in each hand and with rays coming out of his head. These showed divine power and at the end of the rays animals, like pumas and condors, were attached along with maize.</p><br>
<h2>Trade and specialization</h2><br>
<p>Items like turquoise bluish-green stone were traded into the area. They were used for figurines and bluish-green stone was not found in the area. Other stones, gemstones, and minerals were exchanged around the area and according to Anita Cook Pikillaqta may have been the center of the big trade network. The pottery in Pikillaqta was also traded in, Okros and Wamanga style pottery were two of the main styles and they were made around the area. Pikillaqta was one of the biggest Wari sites so other goods were probably traded in and out of the area and housed in the many buildings at Pikillaqta. Many people came around for the ceremonies so a lot of items were probably traded or brought in with them.</p><br>
<p>Specialization could be found in the bluish-green figurines found at Pikillaqta. Two different sets of 40 votive turquoise figurines were found in grave lots. This was an important number because it showed state organization as an administrative unit and rank. These were also the only figurines found so far from the Middle Horizon period. The figurines ranged in size from 18 to 52 milometers. There were turquois processing locations and workshops at Pikillaqta. Stone carving was also present in the city and could have been a specialization. The architecture for the buildings would have needed long precise time to build because they are connected and so big. Specialization of bronze arsenic was also present at the site. There were many artifacts made out of bronze.</p><br>
<h2>Remains found</h2><br>
<p>A few burials were uncovered in excavations at Pikillaqta. Two wall tombs, a couple offering pits, and one room held skeletal remains. In the niched halls (Unit 10), 10 skulls were found in an offering pit. Seven were found earlier and buried in red soil while 3 were found in gray soil and were untouched previous to McEwan’s studies. A metal spike (bronze) was the only other object thing found in this pit. In another pit some bone fragments were found with green stains indicating they were buried with copper even though the copper was not present and a few shell artifacts were found. Looting was done at Pikillaqta and that’s why many artifacts are gone or missing in tombs and graves. Buildings show signs of looting. The looters cleared out possible grave goods that could have been buried with skeletons, especially if they were valuables. In wall tomb 1 a man and woman were found. Small turquoise-colored stone beads were present with the bodies. The bodies were placed in the wall at time of construction in seated position. In the second wall tomb the body was seated up also but fell over at some point.</p><br>
<p>Four nearly complete skeletons and ten other skulls were found at the site.</p><br>
<p>Wall Tomb 1 included adult male and female. The male was aged 35–45, had a healed fracture from blow to face, cranium deformation, and gum disease. The female was aged 35–50, had frontal flattening in cranium, and had more cavities and tooth wear than male found in tomb.</p><br>
<p>Wall Tomb 2 had a female aged 17–20. The bones were just stopping to grow showing the individual was young.</p><br>
<p>The partial skeleton from unit 49 was aged 16–18 and the bones were still forming.</p><br>
<p>Out of the 10 skulls found McEwan looked at 3 of them. One had cranial deformation and another had three healed trephinations.</p><br>
<p>No clear evidence showed the signs of death in the few remains at Pikillacta, not enough research was done also to uncover more information on them.</p><br>
<h2>Abandonment</h2><br>
<p>Pikillaqta was occupied from about 550 to 1100 AD and around 1100 AD is when it was ultimately abandoned. Reasoning for this is not exact but it could have been because of a crisis in the empire or that the Wari were trying to expand somewhere else than planning to come back. There were two stages in the abandonment: the part where the Wari left and then a giant fire after that. The site was abandoned before much of architecture was complete. Sector 2 of site finished architecturally and used according to research. This was the only section fully completely architecturally done. After that part was finished 1, 4 and than sector 3 was being worked on in that order. In sector 1 two excavations showed that the interior walls of the structure were not plastered with clay or white gypsum. In Unit 47 there was evidence of an offering shown there so it was in the process of being built but not complete. Section 4 had most of the architecture finished with some incomplete walls and unfinished floors. In sector 3 Unit 34 showed little amount of completion; the building was full of sterile soil, the walls were unfinished, the floor was not laid, and the offerings in there were not placed in the corners. The door was blocked and sealed in clay probably because it was abandoned during construction. Abandonment occurred during construction of 1, 3 and 4. A crisis in the Wari Empire may have been the cause. The sealing of a number of key doorways occurred so unwanted visitors would have trouble entering some structures. Some buildings were sealed off completely with clay. Valuable goods were not found at hand on site and this could explain why very few artifacts were found anywhere at the site.</p><br>
<p>The last part of the abandonment stage was a massive fire. The Wari sealed up and tried to protect the site like they intended they were coming back so McEwan believed after they left, local people wanted to destroy the site and set it ablaze. Completely carbonized beams and burning on the underside of floors suggests the fire was deliberate. Section 1 and 2 had been destroyed by fire. An abrupt end to the occupation of Wari at Pikillaqta happened. The abandonment was quick then the place was destroyed by fire. McEwan believed they were trying to expand their control and eventually the splitting of the Wari led to the end of the reign of the empire. After the fire looters at unknown times came through the site and got into some of the burials on site. They are the only known people to be active on the site before archaeologists investigated. Pikillaqta is open for visitors and tourists to view the ruins of the once large city.</p><br>
<p>Kedartal  is a glacial lake situated at an altitude of 4,750 m in the Garhwal region of the Himalayas in India. The lake is fed by the snowfall over Thalay Sagar , Meru , Bhrigupanth  and other surrounding peaks, and is the source of Kedar Ganga, which in Hindu mythology is considered to be Shivas contribution to Bhagirathi .</p><br>
<p>Kedartal, at a distance of 17 km from Gangotri, is a popular trekking destination. Starting from Gangotri the route involves a steep rocky climb along the narrow Kedar Ganga gorge en route to Bhojkharak, 8 km away. From there it is 4 km to the next available camping site of Kedarkharak, and a further 5 km to Kedartal. The route passes through scenic Himalayan birch forests, but is made hazardous in places by falling rocks, high altitude and segments of steep ascent.</p><br>
<p>Pedino  is a village in the Kilkis regional unit, Greece, with a population of 817 inhabitants as per the 2011 National Census. The community Pedino  consists of the villages Pedino and Perinthos. There were approx 1400 registered voters in the 2006 local elections. However, many voters reside in the big nearby cities of Kilkis and Thessaloniki and retain their voting rights to the village.</p><br>
<p>The village has a large population of Greek Thracians (Θρακιωτες) from the area of Eastern Thrace, or Eastern Romylia as it also known. A majority emigrated to Pedino from the villages Neo Gennikio, Aivali, Alepli & Koumbourlari, Eastern Thrace. The exact location of the villages in Turkey is not known but they are close to Saranta Ekklisies (Σαράντα Εκκλησίες, Kırklareli in Turkish). The new village was established by refugees, mostly as part of the Population Exchange between Greece and Turkey in 1923 Exchange of Greek Orthodox and Muslim Populations, in addition to any refugees fleeing Turkish persecution after the 1922 Greek military campaign in Asia Minor.</p><br>
<p>The village is part of the municipal unit Gallikos along with the villages of Nea Santa, Galliko, Kambani, Mandres and other smaller villages.</p><br>
<p>Pedino was built in the location of the old village of Hasanova or Hasan Obasi.</p><br>
<p>The Economy of the village until the 1970s was agricultural, mainly production of wheat and barley. In the last 20–30 years the village has seen growth in other less traditional industries.</p><br>
<p>There is a primary school serving approximately 80 children.</p><br>
<p>Nichols Farms is a historic area within the town of Trumbull, Connecticut. The Nichols Farms Historic District, which encompasses part of the area, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.</p><br>
<p>Originally home to the Paugusset people, the Nichols area was colonized by the English during the Great Migration of the 1630s as a part of the coastal settlement of Stratford. The first English settlements followed soon after settlement of the mother-town in 1639.</p><br>
<p>The area was governed by Stratford for eighty six years before a separate village was organized in 1725. Hence, all of Nichols Farms early public records are intermingled with and identified as Stratford records.</p><br>
<p>The early English settlers named Nichols after the family who maintained a large farm in its center. It was first organized as the village of Unity in 1725. The village of Unity (later called North Stratford) continued for seventy-two years before the privileges of a town were granted in 1797.</p><br>
<h2>NRHP listing and buildings</h2><br>
<p>The Nichols Farms Historic District was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on September 20, 1987, with reference number 87001392, and included 104 acre, 81 contributing buildings, one contributing site and one contributing object. The buildings listed on the registry are located close to the green with addresses of Center Road, 1681-1944 Huntington Turnpike, 5-34 Priscilla Place and 30-172 Shelton Road. The 81 buildings are mostly private residences situated on two main roads in a village setting. They represent all of the periods of Connecticut domestic architecture from the early 18th century to the present.</p><br>
<h2>Land use and development</h2><br>
<p>In 1661, the Stratford selectmen voted to allow all inhabitants the liberty of taking up a whole division of land anywhere they could find fit planting ground as long as it was not within two miles (3 km) of the town meeting house, and they were prohibited from making it their dwelling place without consent. Elder Phillip Groves, Captain William Curtiss and Lt. Joseph Judson, early farmers in Nichols Farms, were named to a committee to lay out the land as they saw fit. The common land in Nichols Farms was divided to individuals beginning in 1670 as a part of the three-mile or woods division, and continued up to 1800.</p><br>
<h2>Agriculture</h2><br>
<p>Mischa Hill, located in the geographic center of Nichols Farms, was first called Lt. Joseph Judson&#39;s Farm or Old Farm in the land records. It was the first area within Trumbull to be farmed and settled by English colonists. The first landowners were among the first settlers to arrive at Stratford namely; Richard Booth, Zachariah Bostick, Lt. Paul Brinsmaid, John Curtiss, Benjamin Curtiss, Joseph Curtiss, Captain William Curtiss, Ebenezer Curtiss, Zachariah Curtiss, Joseph Fairchild, Elder Philip Groves, Mr. Joseph Hawley (Captain), Samuel Hawley, Ephraim Hawley, Lt. Joseph Judson, Jeremiah Judson, Isaac Judson, Caleb Nichols, Abraham Nichols, Samuel Uffoot and Reverend Zachariah Walker.</p><br>
<p>Lt. Joseph Judson, Sgt. Jeremiah Judson and Joseph Curtiss established their farms on Mischa Hill before 1658, the year in which they were elected as freemen by the legislature of the Connecticut Colony. To be elected as a freeman at the time, an individual had to own real property in his own name.</p><br>
<h2>Religious rift</h2><br>
<p>In the 1660s, Lt. Joseph Judson disagreed with the majority in town, as he and others tried to introduce the half way covenant. In 1672, Judson obtained permission from then Governor John Winthrop, Jr. to remove with other families and settle the new town of Woodbury. He abandoned his farm in Nichols Farms. In 1688, others like Caleb Nichols removed to Woodbury and in the same year, John Curtiss gifted his farm on Mischa Hill to his son Benjamin and removed there as well. After Judson abandoned his farm, it became commonly called Old Farm.</p><br>
<h2>Abraham Nichols</h2><br>
<p>Abraham Nichols was believed to have made the first permanent settlement within Trumbull around 1690 or 1700, depending on the source, and that others soon followed venturing into the wilderness to establish mills, churches, and schools. Abraham Nichols landholdings were said to total 1,000 acre, with much of it remaining in the Nichols family for more than two centuries. The last of the line was Florence Nichols, who married George Woods in 1903. Soon after their deaths in 1973 and 1972, respectively, the property was deeded to the Nichols Methodist Church.</p><br>
<p>The Town of Trumbull purchased it from the church in 1974. This tract was then known as the Woods Estate and is now the home of the Trumbull Historical Society. Recent research has determined that Nichols holdings totaled around 285 acre of land, of which 55 acre remains as open space today.</p><br>
<p>According to Walter Nicholls, who wrote the History of the Nichols Family in 1909, Abraham did not accompany his father to Woodbury in 1673, but remained in Trumbull to oversee the plantation. However, since Abraham (born 1662) was only eleven at the time, it is more likely that he did go with his parents and family to Woodbury. He returned to Trumbull between 1696 and 1700.</p><br>
<p>Walter Nicholls&#39; description of the Nichols homestead follows:</p><br>
<p>According to Stratford land records, Abraham Nichols purchased several old farms and large parcels of land in 1696. Nichols exchanged his land for 22 acre of Lt. Joseph Judsons old farm which had a barn on it, 54 acre or half the land owned by Jeremiah Judson, and 19 acre of land from Benjamin Curtiss. These transactions are described in the land records as being located at or near the Old farm, Judsons farms or Lt. Joseph Judson farm. In 1699, Lt. Ebenezer Curtiss recorded 15 acre of land from the three-mile division that was bounded west with Lt. Joseph Judsons farm, now belonging to Abraham Nichols. This deed confirms that Nichols purchased Judsons old farm, established in 1658, and was not the first to settle the area.</p><br>
<p>In 1704, Nichols purchased Reverend Zachariah Walker&#39;s entire farm, which was 36 acre in size. In 1708, Nichols bought 5 acre known as Mischa Hill Meadow from Joseph Fairchild, and in 1715 he added 1 acre from Captain John Hawley. These three large farms when combined with Nichols own division land and other parcels, totaled around 285 acre of land. Some of the old farms, about 54 acre, remain as open space today.</p><br>
<h2>Farm Highway</h2><br>
<p>The highway linking Nichols Farms to Stratford, three miles (5 km) to the south, was first called the Farm Highway, and was laid out or completed to the south side of Mischa Hill in December 1696. (In the 21st century, it is called Nichols Avenue or (Route 108). The highway was laid out to the south side of Mischa Hill and at Zachariah Curtiss, his land, and at Captains Farm. Captains Farm was the first farm encountered as travelers entered the village, at Hawley Lane, and was owned by Captain John Hawley at the time. This portion of Route 108 is considered to be the third-oldest documented highway in Connecticut.</p><br>
<h2>Merritt Parkway</h2><br>
<p>The Merritt Parkway was built directly through the original Nichols Farms center in the late 1930s. It displaced the old Nichols Store, which was razed, and the Trinity Church, which was moved. A large 5 by 6 natural stepping stone was the only item saved from the Nichols Store; it was relocated to the front of the Ephraim Hawley House.</p><br>
<h2>Nichols Green</h2><br>
<p>The green in Nichols Farms, known as Nichols Green or N.I.A. Green, is owned and maintained by a private trust called the Nichols Improvement Association, established in 1889 to beautify and improve Nichols Farms.</p><br>
<p>A memorial to those residents who fought in World Wars I and II is located on the south end of the green.</p><br>
<p>An 80 tall pine flagpole brought through the Panama Canal from Washington was erected on the green in 1932. This pine pole replaced an earlier 115 chestnut flagpole erected on July 4, 1892 that carried a 25 by 15 flag and was believed by some to be the highest flag flown in the state at the time.</p><br>
<p>Another well-known landmark near the green is the Bunny Fountain. The fountain was a gift from the Peet family to the citizens of Nichols in 1895. The fountain was moved from its original location at the intersection of Huntington Turnpike and Shelton Road to the intersection of Huntington Turnpike and Unity Road in 1931 after being damaged by a car. It was moved to its present location and restored in the spring of 1971; it was restored again in 1992.</p><br>
<p>An old grinding stone from the 1826 Fairchild (Paper) Mill is placed at the south end of the green. The mill was located at a place commonly called the Falls of the Pequonnock River beginning in 1674. This site is now the town boundary with Bridgeport called Fairchild Park.</p><br>
<p>A piece of the original 1940 Merritt Parkway bridge, which was built over Route 108, is on the green. The concrete ornament is a likeness of the town of Trumbull official seal. The bridge was demolished in 1979 when the interchange was updated.</p><br>
<h2>Properties excluded</h2><br>
<p>State officials excluded 78 buildings from the initial district that were located on Huntington Turnpike, Nichols Avenue and Shelton Road. These buildings were a part of the original district proposed by the Trumbull Historic District Study Committee for Nichols Farms in May 1976. The Ephraim Hawley House, Zachariah Curtiss House and barn (built before 1721), the summer home of American folklorist Will Geer, and a home of helicopter inventor Igor Sikorsky were excluded.</p><br>
<p>A subsequent Historic Building Survey, completed in 2010, has recommended these properties be added to the existing historic district.</p><br>
<p>The Northern Wisconsin Co-op Tobacco Pool Warehouse or Bekkedal Leaf Tobacco Warehouse is located at 504 East Decker Street Viroqua, Vernon County, Wisconsin. It was designed by architects Parkinson & Dockendorff. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places on November 14, 2003.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>Tobacco farming came to Wisconsin in the 1830s from the eastern United States and was appropriated by immigrant Norwegian farmers. Being a profitable cash crop, pioneers traveling to Vernon County brought the craft with them, farming much of the Coon Valley and Westby. Martin H. Bekkedal immigrated in the 1880s and became the largest tobacco leaf wholesaler in western Wisconsin by 1900. His 1906 brick veneered hybrid post-and-beam warehouse was one of the largest tobacco warehouses in the state.</p><br>
<h2>Building features</h2><br>
<p>The profitability in tobacco is evident in the stylish curved parapets on the north and south walls with tobacco leaf medallion decorations.</p><br>
<p>The building contains offices, a receiving room with a scale to weigh incoming tobacco, sorting and packing rooms in the basement, and "sweating" rooms where the temperature can be raised above 115 degrees to cure the tobacco.</p><br>
<h2>Grower co-op</h2><br>
<p>When prices dropped in 1921, the nation&#39;s first tobacco marketing cooperative was formed, the Northern Wisconsin Tobacco Co-op Pool. The co-op then purchased the building from Bekkedal. By enlisting 75% of the local growers, they shut out wholesalers and were able to better control their livelihood. Their success spawned other farmer cooperatives such as in dairy farming.</p><br>
<p>The warehouse is now privately owned.</p><br>
<p>The Fort Omaha Guardhouse was built in 1883 to handle Native American, civilian and military prisoners of the Department of the Platte housed at Fort Omaha. Located at 5700 North 30th Street in north Omaha, Nebraska, the Guardhouse was named an Omaha Landmark by the City of Omaha Landmarks Heritage Preservation Commission in 1982. It is also a contributing property to the Fort Omaha Historic District, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.</p><br>
<h2>About</h2><br>
<p>Placed by the front gates, the Fort Omaha Guardhouse was built as part of a design typical of western United States military forts in the 19th century. Originally constructed as a large L-shaped building, the rear or east wing of the building, closest to North 30th Street, was dissected from the building around 1914. It was used as a storage facility for many years, and the main section of the guardhouse was converted to offices.</p><br>
<p>Big Spotted Horse was captive there in the 1880s. The most famous prisoner of the guardhouse was Ponca Chief Standing Bear during the trial of Standing Bear v. Crook. When General Crook visited him at the Guardhouse he was appalled by the terrible conditions Standing Bear and his tribal members were staying in.</p><br>
<p>Several other prisoners, notably Army deserters, were housed there over the next forty years. There were also several prisoners who were land jumpers that claimed stakes in the Black Hills before 1875.</p><br>
<p>Paravani lake  is a volcanic lake in Georgia, located in Javakheti Plateau between Abul-Samsari and Javakheti Ranges.</p><br>
<h2>Geography and hydrography</h2><br>
<p>Paravani Lake is located 2,073 m above sea level and has a surface area of 37.5 km&sup2; and a drainage basin of 234 km&sup2;. Its maximum and average depths are 3.3 m and 2.2 m respectively. The volume of the lake is 91,000,000 m&sup3;. The water level is low during October and November and is high during May and June. The lake is frozen during wintertime and the thickness of the ice ranges from 47 to 73 cm.</p><br>
<p>In addition to the small rivers of Shaori, Sabadostskali, and Rodionovskis Tskali, the lake gets its water from snow, rain, and underground springs.</p><br>
<p>The Paravani River begins from the southern part of the lake, and connects to the Mtkvari River to the right. The lake is a popular destination for fishing.</p><br>
<p>River Churni is a stream in the Nadia district of the Indian state of West Bengal. It is a distributary of the Mathabhanga River, itself a distributary of the Padma River at Munshiganj in the Kushtia District of</p><br>
<p>Bangladesh. The Mathabanga divides into two rivers, the Ichamati and the Churni near Majhdia in Nadia district.</p><br>
<h2>Course</h2><br>
<p>The Churni flows through Shibnivas, Hanskhali, Birnagar, Aranghata, and Ranaghat, and finally joins River Bhagirathi-Hooghly near Chakdaha. Its length is almost 56 km. The river&#39;s origin is at 23.40 North, 88.70 East and its confluence is at 23.13 North, 88.50 East.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>According to an article in the International Journal of Current Research, the river is in part the remnants of an artificial canal ordered dug by a 17th-century maharajah (king). Changes to a nearby distributary of the Jalangi River resulted partly from water diversion down the canal. Sedimentation eventually dried up the upper part of the distributary, called the Anjana, while the canal and the lower Anjana formed the Churni. Another name for the Churni is Kata Kal or "dug river".</p><br>
<p>As recently as the 1930s, the river was an important route for water travel and trade. However, in the 21st century it has partly filled with silt, including many small islands, visible or submerged, and is no longer navigable.</p><br>
<p>Kinnoull Hill is a hill located in Perth, Scotland.</p><br>
<p>From the hill&#39;s 222m south-facing cliff summit, views are afforded of the River Tay, the Friarton Bridge, and a stretch of the Tay Coast railway line. Further to the south, Moncreiffe Hill can be seen.</p><br>
<p>On an outcrop a few hundred yards to the east of — but visible from — the summit is Kinnoull Tower. Built in 1829 by Lord Grey of Kinfauns as a romantic folly, the tower, along with nearby Binn Tower, originally used as an observatory by Grey, are meant to resemble the castles on the Rhine in Germany as Grey saw a great similarity between the River Tay and parts of the Rhine. The tower is easily accessible via a footpath.</p><br>

<p>In 2010, Kinnoull Hill Woodland Park also came runner up in Scotland&#39;s Finest Woods Awards.</p><br>
<h2>Management</h2><br>
<p>Kinnoull Hill Woodland Park is managed in a partnership between the Forestry Commission Scotland and Perth and Kinross Council. A Users Group has also been established for many years and supports the management of the Woodland Park through a Management Committee.</p><br>
<h2>Sculptures</h2><br>
<p>Woodland sculptures created by Pete Bowsher have been erected in the Woodland Park. There are 14 sculptures reflecting the animals and plants of the park.</p><br>
<p>The Tanggula , Tangla, Tanglha, or Dangla Mountains  are a mountain range in the central part of the Tibetan Plateau in Tibet. Administratively, the range is in the Nagqu Prefecture of the Tibet Autonomous Region, with the central section extending into nearby of Tanggula Town and the eastern section entering the Yushu Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture of Qinghai province.</p><br>
<p>The Tanggula is the source of the Ulan Moron and Dangqu Rivers, the geographic headwaters of the Yangtze River. The range thus functions as a dividing range between the basin of the Yangtze in the north and the endorheic basins of north-eastern Tibet in the south.</p><br>
<h2>Overview</h2><br>
<p>The elevations of the main ridge average more than 5,000 m.</p><br>
<p>The Yangtze River originates in this mountain range; Geladandong, 6,621 m high, located in Tanggula Town, is the tallest peak in the range.</p><br>
<p>The Qinghai-Tibet Highway and the Qinghai-Tibet Railway cross the Tanggula Mountains at Tanggula Mountain Pass. This is the highest point of the Qinghai-Tibet Railway, and the highest point of any railway in the world, at 5,072 m above sea level. On account of snow and occasional road accidents, highway closures and concomitant traffic delays are not uncommon.</p><br>
<p>The mountains lie within the Tibetan Plateau alpine shrub and meadows ecoregion.</p><br>
<p>Chimborazo Hospital was an American Civil War era facility built in Richmond, Virginia to service the medical needs of the Confederate Army. It functioned between 1862 and 1865 in what is now Chimborazo Park, treating over 76,000 injured Confederate soldiers. During its existence, the hospital admitted nearly 78,000 patients and between 6,500 and 8,000 of these patients died. This mortality rate of between 8.3 and 10.3 percent is among the lowest such rates of period military hospitals.</p><br>
<h2>Establishment</h2><br>
<p>In the early days of the Civil War, most people did not expect the conflict to last more than a few months, so the Confederate government failed to immediately established many kinds of necessary military infrastructure, including military infrastructure. Many soldiers were sent to civilian houses to receive medical care, resulting in both unsatisfactory care and illness of many caretakers. Most Richmond-area military hospitals were not purpose-built buildings, but rather repurposed existing structures, including warehouses, hotels, homes, and stores. These facilities quickly became overcrowded and Samuel P. Moore, the new surgeon general of the Confederacy, needed to quickly identify new potential hospital sites.</p><br>
<p>Simultaneously and coincidentally, an undeveloped plateau on the east end of Richmond called Chimborazo Hill, slaves began building a permanent winter quarters including soldiers’ barracks, officers’ quarters, three hospitals, and a bake house. Since most Confederate soldiers would be wintering further north, Moore decided to convert the barracks into a hospital, appointing Dr. James B. McCaw, a professor at the Medical College of Virginia, as surgeon-in-chief.</p><br>
<h2>Facilities and operation</h2><br>
<p>Recording keeping at Chimborazo Hospital was meticulous. There were ninety hospital wards, which all had shingled roofs, wood-plank floors, and whitewashed walls (interior and exterior). Each side of each building had three doors and ten windows; each window had a white curtain. Each ward was warmed by a wood stove and lit at night by a single candle. Each ward measured eighty by twenty feet and contained approximately forty beds. In addition to hospital wards, there were also bake houses, kitchens, ice houses, a soap house, a stable, a guard house, a chapel, a bathhouse, carpenter, blacksmith and apothecary shops, and five dead houses. Each building was surrounded by wide avenues, as McCaw believed fresh air was a medical necessity for recovery.</p><br>
<p>McCaw established a strict formal organizational structure, including divisional hospitals, surgeons, assistant surgeons, acting assistant surgeons, stewards, ward masters, nurses, druggists, cooks, dentists, and matrons. All surgeons were required to have at least five years of medical experience. Other positions were filled by soldiers, free blacks, slaves, and white women. For most of the war, even when the wounded from the nearby Seven Days Battles required tents to accommodate overflow, food was sufficient and medical care received praise. However, as occurred at all hospitals of the day, available resources were not always sufficient and sometimes organizational structures broke down, leading to insufficient care and an unsanitary environment. Soldiers who died at Chimborazo were buried at Oakwood Cemetery.</p><br>
<h2>After the war</h2><br>
<p>As news arrived of Robert E. Lee&#39;s retreat from the Siege of Petersburg on April 2, 1865, patients began to leave voluntarily or be evacuated. McCaw surrendered the hospital the following day. Some Confederate wounded remained as the Union began to bring their own wounded into the hospital; Union and Confederate soldiers resided in separate wards. By early summer, all patients had been removed.</p><br>
<p>Shortly after the buildings were vacated by the military, freed slaves began to occupy the site. While the 13th Amendment had freed all slaves in the United States, it had not provided work nor land nor housing for them. The Freedmen&#39;s Bureau, formally known as the Bureau of Refugees, Freedmen and Abandoned Lands, had been established to provide such necessities to freed slaves, but the bureau was limited in its successes due to insufficient resources, diverse and complex responsibilities, Presidential obstruction of bills to expand the bureau, and Black Codes restricting black movement, labor, and rights. The refugees remained segregated from society.</p><br>
<p>The Chimborazo refugee camp, referred to as the "Nations poorest of the poor," proved a major logistical challenge for the Richmond city government, particularly because the camps white neighbors often complained about the camp and sometimes incited riots. Chimborazo was just outside of Richmond city limits and thus offered little protection from their neighbors, leading to the formation of a militia (Richmond soon expanded its city limits to encompass Chimborazo). The major violent incidents came in March 1866, which were initially characterized as local media sources depicting the conflicts as "Negros" terrorizing defenseless white people. However, it was later realized that white men had been harassing and threatening the community, leading to several arrests of the white men, though all but one were released.</p><br>
<p>In response to the riots, the Freedmen&#39;s Bureau ordered all able bodied men vacate the camp before April 1. The City of Richmond gradually began buying up the land of Chimborazo, gradually removing all of the structures and beginning work on Chimborazo Park.</p><br>
<p>Today, the land of Chimborazo Park is owned by both the City of Richmond (27.9 acres) and the federal government (5.6 acres).The park contains several monuments, including a smaller version of the Statue of Liberty and one commemorating the relationship of Powhatan and John Smith, and a museum and visitor center, the headquarters of Richmond National Battlefield Park, which is primarily focused on Civil War-era battlefield medicine. The surrounding neighborhood has been nationally designated as Oakwood-Chimborazo Historic District.</p><br>
<p>Zapaleri is a volcano whose summit is the tripoint of the borders of Argentina, Bolivia and Chile. A number of railways are in the area. It is part of Potosí Department , Jujuy Province , and Antofagasta Region . The volcano formed on top of the 2.89 mya Tara Ignimbrite from the Guacha caldera and the basement beneath the volcano is formed from Cretaceous and Tertiary rocks affected by tectonic deformation. Volcanic rocks are andesite, basalt, dacite and rhyolite. Late Cretaceous rocks are also found in the area, as are Pleistocene shoshonite volcanic rocks.</p><br>
<p>The Bolivian portion of the mountain is protected within Eduardo Avaroa Andean Fauna National Reserve. Moreover, it is close to the sector Salar de Tara-Salar de Aguas Calientes of Los Flamencos National Reserve, Chile.</p><br>
<p>Zapaleri is associated with a major source of obsidian, with a distribution sphere found in archeological sites over 350 km wide. The obsidian is found on the Bolivian side of the border next to Laguna Blanca. Another source is found on Solterio Mountain. Inca and earlier archeological remains are associated with the obsidian sites.</p><br>
<p>Fellows Lake is an 860 acre source of water for the city of Springfield, Missouri. The lake was created by the impoundment of the Little Sac River behind the Fellows Lake Dam. The dam was originally constructed in 1955 and modified in 1991. The earthen and rock dam stands 102 feet high. It is 1500 feet long at its crest and impounds a maximum capacity of 36,368 acre-feet. Fellows Lake is managed cooperatively by City Utilities of Springfield and the Missouri Department of Conservation.</p><br>
<p>The lake is also developing into one of the state&#39;s premier fisheries of Muskellunge. Muskies approaching 50 in are occasionally caught; such sizes are not matched by any other Muskellunge habitat in the state.</p><br>
<h2>Recreational activities</h2><br>
<p>Due to its proximity to Springfield, Fellows Lake boasts an array of public areas for picnicking, barbecuing, and gathering places. The park surrounding the lake to the north houses one large pavilion on a large open grass area which is frequently used by kite-fliers. The lake also houses two major boat docks and one year-round marina for boat storage. A permit is required to launch a boat.</p><br>
<p>There is also a small 50 yd remote control airplane field run by the Springfield RC Club one mile (1.6 km) north of the lake.</p><br>
<p>Sport fishing opportunities include largemouth bass, black and white crappie, catfish, walleye, muskie, and white bass. Sunfish, carp, and perch are frequently caught. Muskies are stocked yearly by the conservation department.</p><br>
<h2>Condition</h2><br>
<p>The marina was inspected by city engineers and found that the metal bracing substructure was deteriorated. They determined that the dock would be at the end of its life span in 2019. City Utilities plans to close the marina at the end of their lease with the marina&#39;s owner.</p><br>
<p>The Jane Austen Centre at 40 Gay Street in Bath, Somerset, England, is a permanent exhibition which tells the story of Jane Austen&#39;s Bath experience – the effect that visiting and living in the city had on her and her writing.</p><br>
<p>The building is part of a block (31–40 Gay Street) which has been designated by English Heritage as a Grade II listed building.</p><br>
<h2>Waxwork</h2><br>
<p>The Jane Austen Waxwork is a life size wax model of the author, commissioned by the Jane Austen Centre. It was unveiled at the Centre on 9 July 2014 and is currently on public display there. The only verifiable image of her is a small watercolour painted by her sister Cassandra. This, however, has been acknowledged by experts as a ‘poor attempt’ and was described by her niece as ‘hideously unlike’ her aunt Jane. At the same time though, there exists many contemporary descriptions of her by friends and it was in this fact that the origin of the sculpture lies.</p><br>
<p>In 2002, David Baldock, Director of the Jane Austen Centre, commissioned forensic artist Melissa Dring to create a new portrait of Austen, after reading about her work creating a likeness of Vivaldi for a film company, from eye-witness accounts. As David Baldock said: “We were always asked what Jane Austen looked like and in a way the only reference point we had was Jane Austen’s sister, Cassandra’s, very poor watercolour and we didn’t feel it did her justice.” The portrait was unveiled in December 2002. The process was taken a step further in 2011, when the Jane Austen Centre commissioned a three-dimensional, life-size wax figure.</p><br>
<p>Based upon the 2002 portrait, the wax figure’s creation was undertaken by the portrait sculptor Mark Richards. During the three-year process it took to create the Jane Austen figure, Richards worked closely with Melissa Dring, along with hair and color artist Nell Clarke, and designer Andrea Galer. The latter, dressing the completed figure in authentic period costume. The completed figure was unveiled to the world media on Wednesday 9 July 2014, at the Jane Austen Centre; the figure being displayed in a specially created space within the Centre.</p><br>
<p>El Rancho de las Golondrinas , a historic rancho and now a living history museum, is strategically located on what was once the Camino Real, the Royal Road that extended from Mexico City to Santa Fe. The ranch provided goods for trade and was a place where the caravans that plied the road would stop on their journey coming from or going to Santa Fe. It was a paraje, an official rest stop for travelers, and was even mentioned by the great colonial military leader and governor, Don Juan Bautista de Anza, when he stopped here with his expeditionary force in 1780.</p><br>
<p>El Rancho de las Golondrinas, located on 200 acres in the rural farming valley of La Ciénega just south of Santa Fe, New Mexico, strives to maintain examples of life during the period when Spain ruled in the southwestern portion of the North and most of the Central American continent. The museum opened in 1972 and is dedicated to the history, heritage and culture of 18th and 19th century New Mexico. Guides are dressed in period clothing and demonstrate weaving, hide tanning, milling, blacksmithing and the planting of crops. In addition to normal hours of operation there are ten annual festivals at El Rancho de las Golondrinas. Its acequia system (irrigation ditch complex) is on the Register of Historic Places for New Mexico.</p><br>
<p>In 1932, Leonora Curtin and her mother purchased the ranch property. Leonora is known for the founding of Santa Fe’s Native Market in an effort to save and reestablish traditional craft forms and techniques, and to provide local artisans with a source of income during the Great Depression. After their marriage in 1946, Leonora and her Finnish husband, Yrjö Alfred (Y.A.) Paloheimo, saw the potential in the old ranch as a site for a living history museum. Both Leonora and Y.A. devoted themselves to transforming the property into a place where visitors could physically engage with the rich culture of the region and become immersed in the history of New Mexico. Existing historic buildings were restored, period structures were erected and historic buildings were brought in from other sites around New Mexico. The museum officially opened its doors in the spring of 1972 and over time has grown into New Mexico’s premier living history museum. Today the museum promotes and preserves the Hispano heritage of Northern New Mexico, while at the same time building a better understanding of the lasting influence of Hispanos in the Southwest and the rest of the country.</p><br>

<p>Palomo is a 4,860 m high Chilean stratovolcano located in the commune of Machali, Cachapoal province,</p><br>
<p>The edifice of the volcano is irregular and various estimates of its volume exist, ranging 16.6 -. The best estimate is considered to be 9.2 km3. Palomo rises from an elevation of about 3,215 m, and it covers a surface area of 22.4 km&sup2;. Beneath the volcano lie two calderas with diameters of 3 km and 5 km; the summit has a double crater as well, This vent features a 500 m wide crater that opens to the south. Andrés is constructed on a granitoid basement that slopes into the valley of Rio Cortaderal, and its name relates to the son of Reynaldo Charrier, a geologist who described the subsidiary centre in 2010 and who hoped that his son would one day also know the mountain range.</p><br>
<p>The volcano is flanked by glaciers.</p><br>
<p>Several of these sizeable glaciers form the Rio Blanco, Rio Cortaderal and Rio de los Cipreses on the northern flank, which drain into the Cachapoal River. A thermal event in the volcano in 1847 caused a meltwater flood on the Cachapoal River. The southern slope features the 10 km Universidad Glacier, which forms the Rio San Andrés which drains into the Tinguiririrca River. With a snowline altitude of 3,100 -, it was the second longest glacier in Central Chile in 1958, but since then glaciers in the region have shrunk.</p><br>
<p>The edifice is mainly constructed by lava flows that bury parts of the calderas in the foot of the volcano. Palomo has erupted andesite and dacite, as well as basaltic andesite. All rocks are calc-alkaline rocks of medium potassium content. The main edifice rocks contain abundant phenocrysts dominated by plagioclase; clinopyroxene, orthopyroxene and other minerals are less prevalent. The Andrés edifice has a distinct composition, with more amphibole and olivine and less plagioclase than the main edifice.</p><br>
<p>Argon–argon dating has been used to date the rocks erupted by Palomo. The main summit yielded dates of 100,000 ± 40,000 years ago, while postglacial lavas of Andrés are dated at 40,000 ± 30,000 years ago, but volcanic activity at Palomo may have continued into pre-Hispanic times. Future activity at Palomo might generate lahars through the melting of ice, which could affect the valleys of the rivers draining the volcano.</p><br>
<p>The Blake Tenements were built between 1760 and 1772 by Daniel Blake, a planter from Newington Plantation on the Ashley River. The building was named to the National Register of Historic Places in 1970. The building was renovated for use as an annex to a nearby county office building in 1969.</p><br>
<h2>Architecture</h2><br>
<p>The double tenement is three and one-half stories of brick on a high brick basement. The brickwork is laid in Flemish bond on the facade with English bond on the sides. The building was acquired by Charleston County in 1967 and used for county offices.</p><br>
<p>The building is located on Lot 313 of the original plan of the City of Charleston, land which was granted in 1698 to Gov. Joseph Blake, the great-grandfather of the builder. Today, the lot is known as 6 & 8 Courthouse Square.</p><br>
<p>After Hurricane Hugo, the building was closed and later restored along with the next door historic Charleston County Courthouse.</p><br>
<p>Bulli Pass is a mountain pass, presently temporarily closed, with an elevation of 283 m located northwest of, New South Wales, Australia. It is situated on the Illawarra escarpment west of the Illawarra coastal plain. It was built during the 19th century for use by loggers and locals transporting goods to and from Sydney. Beforehand sea travel was the only reliable method.</p><br>
<p>The pass is traversed by the Princes Highway from the Illawarra plain in the south-east to the Woronoa Plateau in the north-west, rising over 300 m in doing so. The pass has a scenic lookout at the top of Bulli Mountain, near Sublime Point Lookout, and this is the sight of the under construction Southern Gateway project. The pass is protected bushland under the Bulli Pass reserve and walking tracks to the lookouts are under repair since 2003.</p><br>
<p>The pass was the first major route out of the plain, not including Mount Keira Road built in 1834 by convicts or O&#39;Briens Road, a private tollway.</p><br>
<p>The Bulli Pass is mainly a two lane undivided road with a steep, winding alignment through a geologically constrained area. The pass has steep slopes both above and below the road. The maximum grade on Bulli Pass is 14.6 per cent. In 2014, the average daily traffic volume over the pass was 12,000 vehicles with an annual growth rate of 1.4 per cent. Heavy vehicles account for about five per cent of total vehicle movements over the pass.</p><br>
<p>In 2008 the pass was subject to a major rock fall that required slope stabilisation works with the Princes Highway closed for seven weeks. Following a serious rock fall in 2015 that landed on a vehicle, there were extensive investigations into the upslope section of Bulli Pass. To ensure the long term safety and stability of Bulli Pass, Roads & Maritime Services is to install 1.1 km of rock fall protection barrier fencing from the M1 Princes Motorway to the hairpin bend in two stages, with the highest risk sections prioritised. As a result, the road is closed to traffic from October 2016 to December 2016, and again from April to June 2017.</p><br>
<p>Montana Mountain is a deeply eroded Late Cretaceous stratovolcano located south of Carcross, Yukon, Canada. As well as its main peak, the mountain includes many sub-peaks and contains felsic pyroclastics and flows; typically altered and orange-weathering. Montana Mountain was formed when the ancient Kula Plate was subducting under southwestern Yukon during the Late Cretaceous period.</p><br>
<p>A flurry of quartz mining activity took place on Montana Mountain starting in 1899, peaking in 1905-1906 when American mining promoter John Conrad consolidated claims on Montana Mountain and built three tramways to carry the ore back down, including a 4-mile-long one from Windy Arm on Tagish Lake to the Mountain Hero mine.</p><br>
<p>Montana Mountain is also an important landmark for the Carcross/Tagish First Nations living in the area. According to legend, Montana Mountain is one of the peaks Game Mother used to hang a swing for her animal creations. On this swing each kind of animal danced and sang a different song. Following this "celebration" Game Mother gave each animal their characteristic attributes of today. In addition to its spiritual importance, the mountain was also an important source of food, medicines, and refuge.</p><br>
<p>During the early quartz mining period, an extensive network of trails were constructed on the mountain to connect the many silver claims with Carcross and/or Windy Arm. In 2005 the Carcross/Tagish First Nation took back the mountain in its land claim settlement and set out to restore some of the old trails and make them accessible for public use and enjoyment.</p><br>
<p>Through a programme called "SingleTrack to Success" an extensive network of mountain bike trails have been developed on the lower slopes of Montana Mountain. Additionally, these trails have been mapped and the maps are publicly available.</p><br>
<p>South Pagai  is one of the Mentawai Islands off the west coast of Sumatra in Indonesia. It is south of North Pagai  Island. The September 2007 Sumatra earthquakes were located near here, producing coastal uplift, enlarging nearby islands and even produced 6 new ones. The 2010 Mentawai earthquake and tsunami also struck of its south-west coast, causing a tsunami.</p><br>
<h2>Surf breaks</h2><br>
<p>South Pagai and its surrounding outer islands host overall what many feel are among the highest quality and the most consistent surf breaks of the Mentawai Islands. The surf breaks in this region were the most affected during he 2007 seismic event. Where the reefs raised around 6 ft in the southernmost tip of the Mentawais. Due to this, the surf breaks were altered and subsequently increased or decreased in quality, and even a few new spots were created. All but a few of the breaks in the South Pagai region are arguably World Class on a consistent basis.</p><br>

<p>Breaks are currently accessible by surf charter boat only, and due to the distance required to travel to the South Pagai region,they are frequented by less operators.</p><br>
<p>An eco-friendly surf resort is reported to be built in 2014, in the South Pagai region based at the ultra consistent and high quality break "Thunders", which many surfers report to be one of the most consistent and highest quality break at all sizes in the archipelago of Indonesia.</p><br>
<p>Sammisoq  is an island in the Kujalleq municipality in southern Greenland, located northeast of Uummannarsuaq cape. It is the largest island of the Cape Farewell Archipelago .</p><br>
<h2>Geography</h2><br>
<p>Its area is 803 km&sup2, and at its largest length is 60 km. It is separated from mainland Greenland to the north by the narrow Prince Christian Sound. The island has glaciers in the south and in the west. Its coast is deeply indented and its southern part is almost separated from the main island by two narrow inlets. To the south lies Itilleq Island and to the west Annikitsoq, both part of the same group.</p><br>
<p>There is one settlement, Ikerasassuaq, also called Prince Christian Sound, Prins Christian Sund or Bluie East One. It is a weather station and has no permanent population.</p><br>
<p>Sammisoq is mountainous and Niaqornaq, its highest point, is 1546 m above sea level. It is an ultra prominent peak, meaning a journey to any higher mountain involves descending more than 1500 m down before going up again, in this case down to sea level.</p><br>
<p>Shannon Island  is a large island in Northeast Greenland National Park in eastern Greenland, to the east of Hochstetter Foreland, with an area of 1,466 km&sup2;. It was named by Douglas Charles Clavering on his 1823 expedition for the Royal Navy frigate HMS Shannon, a 38 gun frigate on which he served as midshipman under Sir Philip Broke.</p><br>
<p>The island is also home to many different type of animals such as polar bears, walruses, ravens, and oxen.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>Most landmarks in the area were named by the Second German Polar Expedition under Carl Koldewey in 1869-70. Between October 1943 and June 1944, the German meteorological expedition Bassgeiger operated under difficult conditions at Kap Sussi on Shannon. Their ship Coburg was wrecked off Shannon. The station was discovered by hunters, but the crew was evacuated by air to Norway.</p><br>
<p>The island is the site of several hunter&#39;s cabins and is reputed to have especially favorable ice conditions.</p><br>
<h2>Geography</h2><br>
<p>Shannon Island is a coastal island, separated from the mainland by a 200 m deep sound of the Greenland Sea.</p><br>
<p>The islands that are located nearby are Kuhn Island to the southwest further inshore and the Pendulum Islands about 12 km to the south.</p><br>
<p>Store Koldewey, meaning Big Koldewey, is an island in King Frederick VIII Land, northeastern Greenland.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>The island was visited by the Second German North Polar Expedition 1869–70, led by Carl Koldewey and referred to as Grosse Koldewey Insel in the astronomy section of the expedition report, but this may not have been intended as a formal name.</p><br>
<p>The present island was shown on Koldewey’s maps as three islands. However, the 1906–08 Danmark Expedition showed them to be connected and coined the present name.</p><br>
<h2>Geography</h2><br>
<p>Store Koldewey is the largest of the Koldewey Islands. It is a long and narrow island separating the Dove Bay to the west from the Greenland Sea. Between the island and the mainland —the Germanialand Peninsula— in the north there is a narrow sound and Lille Koldewey (Little Koldewey), a small double island, as well as some rocks.</p><br>
<p>The southernmost headland of the island is Cape Alf Trolle.</p><br>
<p>Hendrik Island is an island in far northern Greenland. Its area is 583 km². The island is named after Inuit Arctic explorer Hendrik Olsen, who was a member of Knud Rasmussen&#39;s Second Thule Expedition 1916-1917.</p><br>
<h2>Geography</h2><br>
<p>Hendrik Island is a large coastal island located between Saint George Fjord to the west and Sherard Osburn Fjord to the east. Its southern end faces the mouth of Hartz Sound, off the Warming Land Peninsula.</p><br>
<p>The northernmost headland of the island is Dragon Point. Smaller Castle Island lies in Saint Andrew Bay off the northeastern shore of Hendrik Island.</p><br>
<p>The island is largely unglaciated except for small glaciers. It is mountainous, with a peak at its northern end reaching 1152 m. The sea around the island is rarely free from ice.</p><br>
<p>The Amboy Illinois Central Depot is a former rail station in the city of Amboy, Lee County, Illinois, United States. The building was constructed as a headquarters building for the Illinois Central Railroad as well as a public train station for the fledgling city of Amboy in 1876. It was designed by railroad staff architect James Nocquet after a fire destroyed the original Illinois Central offices on the site. The building was added to the USA National Register of Historic Places in 1992.</p><br>
<p>The rectangular, Italianate building operated as Illinois Central Railroad&#39;s Northern Division headquarters until 1894. After 1894 the rail line through Amboy was downgraded in importance by the railroad and the division headquarters moved elsewhere. Today the depot is operated as a public museum. The museum grounds include the depot, which houses artifacts and exhibits and several outbuildings. Also on the property is a steam locomotive which, in 1976, was the last steam engine in the United States to be commissioned for regular freight service. The locomotive was obtained from the now defunct Northwestern Steel and Wire company and is maintained as a static display.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>The Amboy Illinois Central Depot was constructed in 1876 within the right-of-way for the Illinois Central Railroad. When the Illinois Central was authorized by a Stephen A. Douglas-sponsored act of Congress on September 20, 1854 it was to be the largest railroad company on earth. The act authorized a mainline from Dunleith (later East Dubuque) to Cairo and branch lines from Centralia to Chicago. Based upon the length of the divisions, Illinois Central&#39;s division headquarters was to be built in Lee County.</p><br>
<p>The railroad purchased land in the present-day city of Amboy and set up division headquarters operations as well as shop and maintenance operations. The city of Amboy was founded around Illinois Centrals activity in the area. Over the next twenty years operations for the railroads northern division were still led from the original division headquarters even as railroad activity continued to increase. The original building was enlarged in 1863, though accounts still portrayed the structure as too small for the needs of the railroad at the time. On November 15, 1875 the division headquarters building and the adjacent hotel/depot were destroyed by fire.</p><br>
<p>After the fire the railroad decided to raze the remains of the old structure and construct a new combined depot and division headquarters, leaving hotel functions to other private entrepreneurs. The burned out site was cleared and in 1876 the current Amboy Illinois Central Depot was built. Railroad management was carried out by designating divisions which had autonomous control over hundreds of miles of track, the building in Amboy was one such division headquarters. By the time the Amboy Illinois Central Depot was completed in 1876 the entire 345 mi stretch of track from Centralia to East Dubuque was consolidated within the Illinois Central Northern Division, operated out of the Amboy building. The Amboy division headquarters had authority of 53 individual train stations.</p><br>
<p>Operations at the Amboy headquarters and depot continued in this manner until 1894. That year, Illinois Central completed an assessment of the effects of the completion of a new east-west rail line from Iowa to Chicago. Completion of the east-west line had shifted rail traffic from the north-south route through Amboy. The result was fewer scheduled passenger trains and less cargo rolling through Amboy and the railroad decided to downgrade the section of track from Freeport to Centralia (including Amboy) to a sub-division. The headquarters in Amboy were closed and the locomotive repair and maintenance facilities were mostly abandoned and relocated to Freeport, Illinois and Clinton, Illinois.</p><br>
<p>After the division headquarters moved, the depot still carried out railroad functions; the building still served as a crew change location as well as the depot for the village of Amboy. Operations were once again moved about the building. The northwest half of the first floor was transformed into a storage area and the second floor renovated into apartments for the station agent and employees of the nearby Green River Ordnance Plant. The station remained the transfer point for all ammunition made at the hastily constructed ammunition plant throughout World War II and the Korean War.</p><br>
<p>The mid-1980s brought the end of the Amboy Illinois Central Depot&#39;s days as an active rail building. On June 10, 1984 the Illinois Commerce Commission authorized the Illinois Central Railroad to decommission the rail line through Amboy. The railroad announced it intended to demolish the old station. The building, which is owned by a committee from the Village of Amboy, was saved by a citizens group and converted into a museum.</p><br>
<h2>Architecture</h2><br>
<p>The Amboy Illinois Central Depot was designed by railroad staff architect James Nocquet in the Italianate style of architecture. Before Nocquet was employed by Illinois Central he worked in a Chicago architectural firm, Meriam and Nocquet. In 1871 he took his position with the railroad and remained in their employ through the 1870s, including during the time he designed the Amboy depot. The building was designed to be a spacious and modern division headquarters while doubling as a depot for the citizens of Amboy; the southeastern half of the first floor was designed for such use. The depot section consists of waiting rooms and ticketing counters typical of their era while the headquarters portion of the building is well illuminated through ample fenestration.</p><br>
<p>The rectangular shaped building measures 32 ft by 88 ft and its exterior architecture demonstrates its importance to the Illinois Central Railroad. Constructed of red brick with extensive limestone detailing, the depot&#39;s size, height, and ornate brick/stone detailing combine to give it an imposing and elegant character.</p><br>
<h2>Amboy Depot Museum</h2><br>
<p>The Amboy Depot Museum has operated on the site since 2003. The museum encompasses much of the former rail yard that Illinois Central maintained at Amboy&#39;s Northern Division Headquarters for its Cairo to East Dubuque line. When the line was completed in 1855 it was the longest rail line in the world. The museum consists of three buildings with the Amboy Illinois Central Depot being its primary structure. Inside are exhibits and artifacts relating to the history of Amboy and Illinois Central Railroad. Palmer School is a restored one-room schoolhouse that was relocated to museum property during the 1990s from its original location west of Amboy. The other structure is the Amboy Illinois Central Freight House which was relocated to museum property in 2003 to prevent its planned demolition.</p><br>
<p>Amboy Illinois Central Depot has a static steam locomotive display on its property, the locomotive sits on unconnected railroad tracks adjacent the Depot. The locomotive is an 0-8-0 steam engine built in 1929 by Baldwin Locomotive Works as a switcher bearing the number 8376. It was originally operated by the Grand Trunk Western Railroad. Switcher #8376 (8376) was retired from service near Detroit, Michigan in 1958 and sold as scrap. The now-defunct Northwestern Steel and Wire company, in Sterling, Illinois, ended up with 8376 and other steam locomotives, and instead of melting them down the company renovated them. The company then used them to replace their aging internal locomotives, used within the steel mill grounds. Thus, 8376 was brought out of storage and recommissioned in 1976 as NS&W #76. When it was christened, NS&W #76 (76) was the last steam locomotive engine to be commissioned for regular freight service in the United States. 76 operated in daily service until the mill owner&#39;s death in 1980, it was retired shortly after and obtained by the Amboy Depot Commission.</p><br>
<h2>Significance</h2><br>
<p>The Amboy Illinois Central Depot is a locally significant structure because of its affiliation with the Illinois Central Railroad. Most of the building&#39;s architectural elements, interior and exterior, have maintained their integrity and are well preserved.</p><br>
<p>The Eel River is a 3.9 mi river mostly in the village of Chiltonville in Plymouth, Massachusetts. Its headwaters are springs and small ponds above Russell Millpond. Its watershed encompasses approximately 15 square miles. It flows along Plimoth Plantation and Plymouth Beach for about ½ mile before emptying into Plymouth Harbor between the beach and Manters Point.</p><br>

<p>Shingle Brook is the only named tributary of the Eel River.</p><br>
<p>The William Enston Home, located at 900 King St., Charleston, South Carolina, is a complex of many buildings all constructed in Romanesque Revival architecture, a rare style in Charleston. Twenty-four cottages were constructed in 1887 along with a memorial chapel at the center with a campanile style tower, and it was reserved for white residents. An infirmary was added in 1931 and later converted into a superintendent&#39;s home.</p><br>
<p>In 2006, construction was undertaken on a series of additional cottages which were meant to complete the plan for the community. These cottages, located at the southern edge of the property, are reminiscent of the original design but lack the architectural detail of the originals. Today the complex is owned by the Housing Authority of Charleston and the restored cottages are home to persons of low to moderate income.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>William Enston was a prosperous furniture maker, merchant, and steamship magnate who left his fortune for the creation of a home for the white elderly. He was born on May 5, 1808, in Canterbury, England, and immigrated to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania with his father in 1825. In 1832, he moved to Charleston, South Carolina and later married Hannah Shuttleworth of Colsterworth, England. He began a small store on King Street. (later building the large structure still standing at 187-191 King St.) He eventually amassed a fortune through real estate and commercial shipping. He died on March 23, 1860, leaving a fortune valued at $1 million, but the Civil War reduced its value to half that amount.</p><br>
<p>Site work began in 1884, but construction of the housing units did not begin for a few more years. The City of Charleston received the proceeds of the estate in 1886 following the death of Enstons widow. In 1887, twenty-seven years after the death of Enston, W.B.W. Howe, Jr. designed the complex of two-story brick cottages according to Enstons instructions. The Home was to be modeled on similar British institutions, specifically one Enston was familiar with in his native Canterbury. Enston specified that the complex be composed of neat and convenient two-story brick cottages with at least eight acres of land. He also stipulated that potential residents be the old and sick, from 45 to 75 years old, of "good honest character," and not suffering from "lunacy." Original streets in the development reflect people and places from Enstons life including Shutterworth (his wifes maiden name), Canterbury (his hometown), and Coltersworth (his wife&#39;s hometown).</p><br>
<p>In 1991, the Charleston Housing Authority contracted to buy the property from the Enston Foundation for $625,000. The deal was cancelled in December 1991, however, when the Housing Authority realized the extent of repair work needed (estimated at $1.7 million). The authority had 13 new units built in 2006, designed in a contemporary style by Judy Stephens.</p><br>

<p>The William Blacklock House is a historic house at 18 Bull Street in Charleston, South Carolina. A National Historic Landmark, this brick house, built in 1800 for a wealthy merchant, is one of the nation&#39;s finest examples of Adamesque architecture. It is now owned by the College of Charleston, housing its Office of Alumni Relations.</p><br>
<h2>Description and history</h2><br>
<p>The Blacklock House is set on the southern edge of the College of Charleston campus in central Charleston, on the north side of Bull Street. The house is a two-story brick house, set on a high brick basement. Its roof is hipped, with a gable above the center entrance. The entrance is reached by a double flight of stairs with iron railings, and is flanked by sidelight windows, with a fanlight window above. The windows in the bays on either side of the entrance have round-arch tops, while the remaining windows have flat lintels with keystones. The window above the door is a larger window with sidelights, and the gable above has a large fanlight lunette in it. The property includes two outbuildings, each of which have Gothic Revival features.</p><br>
<p>The house was built by William Blacklock who, on September 24, 1794, purchased two lots in the newly laid out Harleston Village. Although likely built in 1800, Blacklock was first listed as living in the house in 1802 according to a city directory (based on the prior years information). The houses design has similarities to the work of Gabriel Manigault, but no attribution has ever been confirmed. Blacklock was a member of the committee responsible for the construction of a bank (now City Hall) which was designed by Manigault in the same year. Other design elements of 18 Bull St. are similar to those uses in other Manigault designs.</p><br>
<p>The house underwent a major restoration in 1937, and was acquired by the College of Charleston in 1974. It was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1973.</p><br>
<p>The William Gibbes House is a historic house at 64 South Battery in Charleston, South Carolina. Built about 1772, it is one of the nation&#39;s finest examples of classical Georgian architecture. It was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1970.</p><br>
<h2>Description and history</h2><br>
<p>The Gibbes House is set on the north side of South Battery, at the southern end of the historic Charleston peninsula. It is a two-story wood frame structure, set on a high stone foundation. It is covered by a hip roof with a front-facing gable, and is sheathed in wooden clapboard siding. The main facade is five bays wide, with a central main entrance that is accessed by stairs descending from the landing on either side, and a service entrance in the basement level between the stairs, set in a segmented-arch opening. The main entrance is set under a broad modillioned pediment, which is supported by four pilasters, with wide sidelight windows between the outer pairs. First-floor windows are framed by pedimented lintels and bracketed sills, while the second-floor windows have flatter cornices. The main roof line is modillioned, as is the gable above, which has a round window at its center.</p><br>
<p>The interior follows a plan known in Charleston as a "double house". It has four rooms on each floor, two on each side of a central hall, which is an elaborately decorated space with a columned arch and a staircase with a Civil War-era wrought iron railing. Most of its interior stylings are not Georgian but Adamesque, the result of a 1794 restyling. The south parlor spaces are fully paneled. On the second floor is a ballroom with a cove ceiling adorned with plaster medallions and corner fans.</p><br>
<p>The house lot was purchased by William Gibbes in 1772, and would at that time have included waterfront access. The house was probably built soon afterward, and was certainly completed by 1779. The Smith family purchased the house in 1794, and remodeled portions Adamesque style, including the marble steps in front. The wrought iron balustrade and lantern standards in front are considered among the best ironwork of the Adamesque period in Charleston. After the Civil War, the house was acquired by the widow of Washington Roebling, builder of the Brooklyn Bridge; she extended the building to the north in 1928.</p><br>
<p>The Branford-Horry House was already standing when William Brandford died in 1767. It is located at 59 Meeting Street, Charleston, South Carolina. The house was named to the National Register of Historic Places in 1970.</p><br>
<p>The three-story house of stuccoed brick has very fine Georgian interiors. The front piazza, built over the sidewalk, was added by Branford&#39;s grandson, Elias Horry, in about 1830.</p><br>
<p>The house is unusual for its piazza, which extends over the public sidewalk. In 1988, a speeding car crashed into the house, knocking out two of the columns and sending one into the front door of the house.</p><br>
<p>The house was built after 1751, when William Branford married Elizabeth Savage, who had inherited the corner parcel from her uncle Benjamin Savage. Upon her death in 1801, the home was inherited by Ann Branford and her husband Thomas Horry. Their son Elias Horry, added the piazza. The house was sold to Anthony Barbot in 1831.</p><br>
<p>The Fireproof Building, also known as the County Records Building, is located at 100 Meeting Street, Charleston, South Carolina. Built in 1827, it was the most completely fire-resistant building in America and it is believed to be the oldest fire-resistant building in America today. It was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1973.</p><br>
<p>The building has undergone renovation and will reopen in the summer of 2018 as the South Carolina Historical Society Museum, which will include an exhibit on the history of the Fireproof Building.</p><br>
<h2>Description and history</h2><br>
<p>The Fireproof Building is set in central Charleston, at the northwest corner of Washington Square. It is a two-story masonry structure, set on a tall stone foundation with an arcade of round-arch openings and built out brick that has been stuccoed to resemble stone. The building is in the Palladian style, with Doric porticoes north and south, and achieves a sophisticated appearance with clean and crisp lines, and relatively little ornamentation. Inside, the building has an oval stair hall lit by a cupola. The stone stairs are cantilevered through three stories.</p><br>
<p>The building was designed by Robert Mills and constructed by John G. Spidle in 1827. Mills, the nation&#39;s first domestically-trained architect, was an early advocate of buildings designed to include fire-resistant materials. It was originally used to house offices and records for Charleston County offices. Today, the building is the home of the South Carolina Historical Society.</p><br>
<p>The Fireproof Building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1969,</p><br>
<p>In 2016-7 the building underwent a major renovation, intended to modernize all systems, provide a secure, climate controlled environment for the storage of historic documents, and to provide both an events venue ans an modern museum space. In the summer of 2018 the Historical Society will open completely revamped museum of the history of South Carolina and of the Fireproof Building itself.</p><br>
<p>Presquile, or Presquiile, , the French term for "peninsula", was an appropriate name for the house built at 2 Amherst St., Charleston, South Carolina between 1802 and 1808 because, at the time, the house stood on a finger of high ground that projected into the marshes of the Cooper River. The builder, Jacob Belser, was a planter, attorney, and state senator . Subsequent owners included Theodore S. Marion, Joshua T. Ward, Maj. Samuel Porcher , Henry Grimke, Joseph Leary, and C.F. Klenke. Then, in 1951, it was bought by the Baptist Association.</p><br>
<p>It has been speculated that the house was designed by Gabriel Manigault. The interior has fine Adamesque decorations of carved wood and a spiral staircase. There is a single room on each of the first floors and two on the third, in the main, older portion of the house. The stair is set in a semicircular bay on the rear.</p><br>
<p>A square, three-story rear wing in the Greek Revival style was added by Henry Grimke, a planter who acquired the house in 1840.</p><br>
<p>In 1962, the Baptist Association announced that the house would be sold so that the operation of their operations could be relocated nearer their users. The house was bought by Arthur Ravenel, Jr. & Co. from the Historic Charleston Foundation in early 1973 for $25,000 and restored starting in 1973. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978.</p><br>
<p>Point Judith Pond is a shallow, four-mile -long salt body of water lying behind the barrier beaches and sand dunes that form Point Judith Harbor, which lies immediately west of Point Judith in Narragansett, Rhode Island at the southwestern tip of Narragansett Bay. Located about 14 mi southwest of Newport Harbor, Point Judith Pond forms a partial border between the communities of Narragansett and South Kingstown, and is connected to Point Judith Harbor by a narrow waterway that cuts through the beaches and sandy shoreline. This waterway is used by a large fishing fleet and local and transient recreational craft. The harbor handles a large amount of passenger traffic, primarily during the summer. Year-round ferry service is available between Point Judith and Block Island.</p><br>
<p>Original work in Point Judith Harbor dates back to 1905. Work in the present project, completed in 1950 (except where noted), consists of:</p><br>
<p>A 6,970 ft-long main stone breakwater in Point Judith Harbor, situated about 0.5 mi from shore. This breakwater, constructed roughly in a "V" shape, and the two others mentioned below were built in 1914.</p><br>
<p>A 2,240 ft-long stone breakwater extending southwesterly from Point Judith. Between the breakwaters there is a gap of about 1,200 ft, which allows boating craft to enter the harbor.</p><br>
<p>A 3,640 ft-long stone breakwater extending southerly from the entrance to Point Judith Pond. Between this breakwater and the main breakwater there is a gap of about 1,500 ft.</p><br>
<p>A 15 ft-deep channel, 150 ft wide, that runs along the east side of the west breakwater and extends past the entrance to Point Judith Pond and the state-built jetties at the Port of Galilee. The channel ends on the west side of the pond at a point 100 ft north of the State Pier in Jerusalem.</p><br>
<p>A 15 ft-deep channel, 200 ft wide, that branches off from the aforementioned channel at a point past the state built jetties and extends up the east side of Point Judith Pond. When originally constructed in 1950, the channel ended about 100 ft north of the State Pier in Galilee. In 1977, the channel was lengthened by 1,400 ft and widened to dimensions varying between 150–640 feet. This most recent work was completed as a small project under Section 107 of the Continuing Authorities Program.</p><br>
<p>A 10 ft-deep anchorage, 5 acre in area, located on the ponds westerly side, immediately inside the ponds entrance.</p><br>
<p>A 4.5 mi-long channel, six feet deep and 100 ft wide, starting at a point 100 ft north of the State Pier in Jerusalem and running generally along the west side of the pond, ending in the Wakefield village of South Kingstown.</p><br>

<p>The removal of two shoals to a depth of 18 ft. One shoal was removed from the 10 ft-deep anchorage area, and the second from the east side of the Point Judith Pond entrance. This work was completed in 1921.</p><br>

<p>Princeton Downtown Commercial District is a historic district in downtown Princeton, Kentucky centered on the 1940s art deco courthouse. The district includes 44 contributing resources: 42 buildings, Big Spring Park, and the Confederate Soldier Monument. Most resources are located along East and West Main Street, East and West Court Square Street, and the adjacent buildings on West Market Street, South Harrison, West Washington, and South Jefferson. Most of the buildings are one or two-story brick structures built from the 1870s to the 1930s.</p><br>
<p>The downtown district was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1988 because of the historic architecture and historical significance to the area.</p><br>

<p>Irvine Lake is a reservoir in Orange County, California, United States. The lake is on Santiago Creek, located in Silverado, California, east of the city of Irvine and close to Irvine Regional Park.</p><br>
<p>The lake is formed by the Santiago Dam at the lake&#39;s north end, which was built between 1929 and 1931, and was originally called the Santiago Reservoir. The dam was built by the Irvine Company (the private developers of the city of Irvine) and the Serrano Irrigation District (now called the Serrano Water District); it is now owned by the Serrano Water District and the Irvine Ranch Water District and operated by Serrano Water District. The lake provides drinking water to Villa Park and some parts of Orange, and provides supplementary irrigation water to neighboring ranches.</p><br>
<p>Access to the lake is via Santiago Canyon Road, the road leading from Orange to Silverado. The Cleveland National Forest is on the northeast side of the lake.</p><br>
<p>Stocked with largemouth bass, catfish, trout, and crappie, the lake fishery opened to the public in 1941. The land around the lake is owned by the Irvine Company, which leases the fishing, boating, and camping concessions to SWD Recreation Inc.</p><br>
<p>The lake has not been full since 2011 due to an extended drought, and its levels have been steadily decreasing. As of September 2016, it was at 13 percent of capacity.</p><br>
<p>Rizospilia  is a mountain village and a community in the municipal unit Dimitsana, western Arcadia, Greece. The community of Rizospilia consists of the villages Rizospilia and Kato Rizospilia . It is situated in a remote, mountainous area. It is 3 km northeast of the river Alfeios, 8 km southwest of Dimitsana, 10 km northeast of Andritsaina and 12 km northwest of Karytaina. The community Rizospilia had a population of 51 in 2011.</p><br>

<p>South-east of Rizospilia, and en route to Paliokastro, you will find an archaeological site preserving ancient Mycenaean monuments. One of the largest of its kind, this site is home to numerous Mycenaean tombs of important Mycenaean historical figures. They are very large in comparison to other Mycenaean tombs found in other locations around Greece and occupy a beautiful location with a panoramic view over the Alfios valley. Although not yet uncovered, logic has it that in close proximity to this relatively large in size "ancient cemetery", there must be a significant ancient Mycenaean settlement. Home to important leaders and/ or kings, it is certain that the ruins of an ancient Mycenaean civilization exist in the area.</p><br>
<p>St. Stephen&#39;s Church, formerly the New North Church, is a Roman Catholic church located at 401 Hanover Street in the North End of Boston, Massachusetts. It is the last remaining church in Boston designed by Charles Bulfinch.</p><br>
<h2>Design and construction</h2><br>
<p>The church, made of red brick with white pilasters on the façade and topped by a clock tower and a belfry, was originally designed as the second edifice of the New North Religious Society, a Congregationalist group. Its cornerstone was laid on September 23, 1802, and the building dedicated on May 2, 1804. Three days later the Columbian Centinel wrote:</p><br>
<p>Bulfinchs specifications show that the church was designed nearly square, with inside dimensions of 70 (length) × 72&#39;. A transverse section exhibits roof framing similar to that of Holy Cross Church. Some of the timber of the old church (built 1714, rebuilt 1730) was used, and when the Bulfinch building was restored in 1964–65, the underpinning was found to be entirely sound. However, the roof was less skillfully constructed, and severe leakage was arrested only after the pitch was sharpened and the whole covered with imported slate a few years after dedication.</p><br>
<p>The church cost $26,570, nearly all of which was raised by the sale of pews. Charles Shaw judged it "a commodious brick building," while William Bentley, who thought it took too long to build, nevertheless commended its "good style."</p><br>
<h2>Transitions</h2><br>
<h3>Unitarian</h3><br>
<p>Like many Boston congregations of the time, New North went over to Unitarianism, and from 1813 to 1849, Rev. Dr. Francis Parkman (1788–1852), an eloquent preacher and father of historian Francis Parkman, was its minister. By 1822 the church was complaining that “the young gentlemen who have married wives in other parts of the town have found it difficult to persuade them to become so ungenteel as to attend worship in the North End”; Parkman himself preferred to live in the vicinity of Bowdoin Square.</p><br>
<h3>Catholic</h3><br>
<p>In 1862, with the North End’s composition greatly changed by an influx of Irish Catholics, the church was sold to Bishop Fitzpatrick of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Boston and renamed St. Stephen’s. In the conversion the weathervane was removed, a peak built over the original domed cupola in the manner of Holy Cross Church, and a cross and clock added. Either at this time or after the fire of 1897, the arched windows in the altar were blocked up and other changes made in the interior. When Hanover Street was widened in 1870 the edifice was moved back 16 feet and raised more than 6 feet above the original foundation.</p><br>
<p>The parish closed in 1992. The Church is now the home church for the Missionary Society of St. James the Apostle.</p><br>
<h2>Restoration</h2><br>
<p>In 1964 Cardinal Cushing authorized the restoration of the church, including the lowering of the building upon its original foundation and the reconstruction of the Bulfinch cupola. Chester F. Wright was architect for the rebuilding and the work was done by Isaac Blair & Co., the same firm that had raised and moved the church almost a century earlier. During the restoration a careful search was made for evidence of the original work, and in the process the old copper-covered dome was found beneath the false cap and the side entrance doors, complete with hardware, were discovered bricked up in the porch. George E. Ryan wrote of the restoration work:</p><br>
<p>The interior is not entirely faithful to the Bulfinch design, although the pulpit and pews are copied from originals long held in a Billerica church. The brownstone pilasters in the façade were meant to be painted white to simulate marble, as in a number of surviving houses on Beacon Hill.</p><br>

<p>Mont Lozère  is the highest peak in the Cévennes, a subrange of the Massif Central in France. It is 1,699 m above sea level and lies within the Cévennes National Park.</p><br>
<p>Mont Lozère is commonly used for skiing during the winter months. It is also a popular destination for student groups during the summer months. It offers some stunning natural scenery and is covered by coniferous plantations and broom scrub moorland.</p><br>
<p>Mount Lozere is the source of the River Tarn, and also the highest point on the Robert Louis Stevenson Trail (GR 70), a popular long-distance path following approximately the route travelled by Robert Louis Stevenson in 1878 and described in his book Travels with a Donkey in the Cévennes. The GR70 follows a draille (drove road) across the mountain, marked by montjoies (standing stones).</p><br>
<p>Loon Lake is a glacial lake in northern Lake County, Illinois, United States. It comprises three lakes; East Loon, West Loon, and North Loon. . It is located near the town of Antioch, Illinois, near the intersection of Route 83 and Grass Lake Rd. It is home to many different species of fish, birds, reptiles, and amphibians. Some of which are endangered species, including the blacknose shiner.</p><br>
<h2>Hydrography</h2><br>
<p>West Loon Lake is a glacial lake that has a maximum depth of 38–44 feet. It has an area of 166 acre and more than 2.1 mi of shoreline. It is an extremely clear lake, transparency of the lake is 15–18 feet depending on the time of year. Water clarity has been at the highest level in 15 years.</p><br>
<p>East Loon Lake is a Glacial lake that has a maximum depth of 26–28 feet. It is slightly larger than West Loon Lake with an area of 168 acre and more than 4.8 mi of shoreline. East Loon has a different ecological makeup; compared to West Loon, it is more of a nature lake then a recreational lake. The clarity of this lake is much poorer than West, only 5–7 feet.</p><br>
<h2>Ecological concerns</h2><br>
<p>West Loon Lake was used as a source of ice during the late 19th and early 20th century.</p><br>
<p>Invasive and non-native species have been found in Loon Lake. In August 2005 a Caiman was found in East Loon Lake. Zebra Mussel have been introduced into West and East Loon Lakes; it is not known how exactly they were introduced to the lakes, but it is suspected to come from either Lake Michigan or Geneva Lake in Wisconsin.</p><br>
<p>Although there are no immediate threats to Loon Lake, development in the area has increased the amount of pollution in the lake. Walmart during the construction of its store located in Antioch has been fined for polluting East Loon Lake.</p><br>

<p>Supiori is an island of the Schouten Islands archipelago in Cenderawasih Bay, just west of Biak island in Papua Province, Western New Guinea, northeastern Indonesia.</p><br>
<h2>Description</h2><br>
<p>The island has a rugged terrain, largely covered in tropical rainforest. It is about 40 km long and 25 km wide, covering a total area of 659 km&sup2;. Its highest point is 1,034 m in elevation.</p><br>
<p>Principal settlements include Korido on the south coast and Yenggarbun on the north coast. South of Supiori lie the small coral islands Aruri (Insumbabi) and Rani. Before 1963, the island was part of the colonial Netherlands New Guinea. It comprises Supiori Regency within Papua Province.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>The island was first sighted by Europeans by the Portuguese Jorge de Menezes in 1526. Menezes landed at Biak Islands, where he was forced to winter.https://books.google.pt/books?id=Z9U-FUPS3DkC&dq=gaspar+viegas+1537+Jorge+Menezes&hl=pt-PT&source=gbs_navlinks_s One of the first sightings was also made by the Spanish navigator Álvaro de Saavedra on 24 June 1528, when trying to return from Tidore to New Spain. The Schoutens were charted as Islas de Oro (Golden Islands in Spanish).</p><br>
<p>Its sighting was again reported by Spanish navigator Íñigo Órtiz de Retes in 1545. It was charted as Los Martires by the Spaniards, possibly because it was where Spanish navigator Hernando de Grijalva was murdered by his mutinied crew.</p><br>
<p>Batanta is one of the four major islands in the Raja Ampat Islands in West Papua province, Indonesia. Its area is 453 km² and its highest point is 1184 m. The Pitt Strait separates it from Salawati, while the Dampier Strait separates it from Waigeo.</p><br>
<p>Dampier strait is named for the English explorer William Dampier. In 1759 Captain William Wilson sailing in the East Indiaman Pitt navigated these waters and named the channel between Batanta and Salawati Pitt Strait, after his vessel.</p><br>

<p>The Tronto  is a 115 km long Italian river that arises at Monti della Laga and ends in the Adriatic Sea at Porto d&#39;Ascoli, San Benedetto del Tronto. It traverses the Lazio, Marche, and Abruzzo regions of Italy.</p><br>
<p>The source of the Tronto is in the Monti della Laga mountain range in the province of Rieti. Monte Gorzano is north of the source of the river and Lake Campotosto is south of the source of the river. The source of the river is near the place where the provinces of Rieti, Teramo, and L&#39;Aquila meet.</p><br>
<p>From its source in the Monti della Laga mountains, the Tronto flows northwest near Amatrice and Lago di Scandarello and crosses the border into the province of Ascoli Piceno near Accumoli. From there, it flows northeast and flows past Arquata del Tronto and then curves east and flows past Acquasanta Terme. The river then flows northeast and curves east and flows past Ascoli Piceno. The river continues flowing east near Folignano and eventually forms the border between the provinces of Ascoli Piceno and Teramo near SantEgidio alla Vibrata and Castel di Lama. The river continues flowing east near Spinetoli, Monsampolo del Tronto, and Colonnella and finally enters the Adriatic Sea by Martinsicuro and Porto dAscoli.</p><br>
<p>The Santa Barbara County Courthouse is located at 1100 Anacapa Street, in downtown Santa Barbara, California. The Spanish Colonial Revival style building was designed by William Mooser III and completed in 1929. Architect Charles Willard Moore called it the "grandest Spanish Colonial Revival structure ever built," and the prime example of Santa Barbara&#39;s adoption of Spanish Colonial as its civic style.</p><br>
<h2>Description</h2><br>
<p>The courthouse is composed of four buildings, totaling 150,000 ft&sup2;. It includes a Jail Wing, which is no longer used to hold prisoners. Visitors may take elevators to the summit of the 85 ft "El Mirador" clock tower, which has labeled photographs that show what the viewer is looking at in all directions.</p><br>
<p>Currently, the Santa Barbara County Courthouse is undergoing several restoration projects in the various wings, and just finished restoring the disintegrating fountain in the front.</p><br>
<p>Occupying an entire city block, the grounds contain a collection of palms and specimen trees from more than 25 countries. The courthouse hosts many events, particularly at the Sunken Garden, site of the 1872 courthouse. As of 2015, almost 7,000 visitors from 60 countries came to visit in the past year.</p><br>
<h2>Façade</h2><br>
<p>The main entrance to the courthouse features a large façade depicting two enthroned figures; between the figures is an inscription of a Spanish translation of a quote from Marcus Terentius Varro. The equivalent English translation is found on the right door to the right.</p><br>
<p>The Farrar Distillery is a 19th-century distillery in Noah, Tennessee, about 11 miles  north of Manchester.</p><br>
<p>The distillery is located on a family farm that dates to 1869, when Alexander Farrar purchased a tract of 103 acre. He expanded the farm in 1875 when he acquired an additional 30 acre. In addition to producing wheat, corn, small grains and livestock on the farm, Farrar established the distillery, producing and selling corn whiskey and apple and peach brandy. The distillery operated until 1902, when it was closed after being damaged by flooding.</p><br>
<p>The Farrar Distillery was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1984. The farm property, now known as the Thomas Farm, is owned by Wanda Lou Hannah and Jack Nolan Thomas, descendants of the Farrar family. It is recognized as a century farm. A barn built on the property by Alexander Farrar during the 19th century is also intact. It is used for storage.</p><br>
<p>The Wheelwright Museum of the American Indian is a museum devoted to Native American arts. It is located in Santa Fe, New Mexico and was founded in 1937 by Mary Cabot Wheelwright, who came from Boston, and Hastiin Klah, a Navajo singer and medicine man.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>Wheelwright and Klah were introduced in 1921 and quickly became close friends. It was not long before they determined to create a permanent record of Klah’s and other singers’ ritual knowledge. Klah dictated and Wheelwright recorded the Navajo Creation Story and other great narratives that form the basis of Navajo religion. While Wheelwright concentrated on the spoken word in Navajo ritual, Frances (“Franc”) Newcomb focused on the sandpaintings that are created and destroyed during healing ceremonies, recreating versions of them in tempera on paper. Klah participated in yet another way: he was a weaver, and his huge tapestries were also permanent records of sandpaintings.</p><br>
<p>By the early 1930s, it was clear to Wheelwright and Klah that a museum would be necessary to realize their goals. It could not be simply a repository for the sound recordings, manuscripts, paintings, and sandpainting tapestries. It had to offer the public an opportunity to sense the beauty, dignity, and profound logic of Navajo religion. Their chosen architect, William Penhallow Henderson, based his design on the hooghan (the hogan), the traditional Navajo home and the setting for Navajo ceremonies. Klah blessed the ground on which the museum is built but died a few months before it was completed. A traditional Navajo house blessing was conducted by the singer Big Man in November 1937, and many of Klah’s relatives attended. The museum’s earliest names were the Navajo House of Prayer and the House of Navajo Religion, but, soon after it opened to the public, its name officially became the Museum of Navajo Ceremonial Art.</p><br>
<p>In the 1960s and 1970s, the Navajo Nation exerted its independence through a number of sweeping changes, including the establishment of its own community college system. Also at that time Navajo singers founded the Navajo Medicine Men’s Association. The teachings of traditional Navajo religion enjoyed a revival, and its practitioners began to express their concerns about the teaching of Navajo religion by anyone other than Navajos. In 1977 the museum therefore repatriated several Navajo medicine bundles and other items to the Navajo people.</p><br>
<p>With the repatriation of 1977, the museum changed its name to the Wheelwright Museum of the American Indian. Although it is no longer actively involved in the study of Navajo religion, it maintains growing, world-renowned collections that document Navajo art and culture from 1850 to the present. It also presents changing exhibitions on traditional and contemporary Navajo and other Native American arts.</p><br>

<p>The falls is owned by the town of Valdese, North Carolina, which has built a city park around the falls. The falls was the home to a mill called Meytre Grist Mill, which was built in 1906 by Fred Meytre. The mill remained in operation until 1941, when Mr. Meytre became too old to operate the mill without younger men, who were being called to serve during World War II. The mill was rebuilt in 1982 for the park.</p><br>

<p>The falls is located at McGalliard Falls Park in Valdese, North Carolina. The park may be found by taking exit 112 off of Interstate 40 and going north to Main Street in Valdese. Head west on Main Street for.8 miles and turn right onto Church St. Go north 1.5 miles to the turn-in for the park on the right. There is a short path to the falls.</p><br>

<p>The Governor&#39;s School of Engineering and Technology, or GSET, is one of the six original schools that comprise the New Jersey Governor&#39;s School program. Since its inception, the program has been held at Rutgers University in Piscataway, in Middlesex County, New Jersey and aims to educate scholars in the fields of engineering and technology. This program is tuition-free and receives funding from sponsors, alumni, the state of New Jersey, Rutgers University, and others. This 4-week residential summer program is academically intense and demanding with very little free time. It typically runs from the end of June to the middle/end of July. A typical student participates in two elective courses, along with the core courses of Physics, and Robotics. Their schedule also includes keynote speakers, tours, enrichment activities, and a research project. The research project is one of the main focuses of the program, in which students conduct research, design experiments, and write a professional research paper. On the final day, a symposium is held to showcase the research, projects, and creations. The symposium is open to both invited guests and the public.</p><br>
<p>The application process begins with nominations from the high schools. As stated on their official website, "All applicants must be nominated by their high schools. (High schools can nominate one applicant for every 325 members of their junior class. i.e. a school with 100 juniors may nominate 1 student; a school with 400 juniors may nominate 2 students; a school with 645 juniors may also nominate only 2 students). Admission to the program is very competitive. Following a competitive process at each high school in which dozens of students may express interest in attending the program, we generally receive between 300 and 400 applications from these nominees. Of the nominees, who are the best and brightest students at their respective schools, fewer than 25% generally receive offers of admission." On the application, it states:</p><br>
<p>To be considered for the Governor’s School of Engineering & Technology, a student must meet the following criteria:</p><br>
<p>→ The student must be a New Jersey resident and be a high school junior during the 2016-2017 school year.</p><br>
<p>→ The student must have a very strong interest in engineering and technology and be committed to the acquisition of</p><br>
<p>knowledge and the pursuit of opportunities in that field.</p><br>
<p>→ The student must be willing to live on campus for the duration of the program. Saturdays and Sundays make up part of</p><br>
<p>the program; there will be no weekend leaves of absence.</p><br>
<p>→ The applicant must be one of the top students in his or her school. The student should have primarily “A” grades in</p><br>
<p>honors math and science classes and outstanding scores on standardized achievement tests. Students who have</p><br>
<p>demonstrated very strong abilities in engineering outside the classroom can also be strong candidates for the</p><br>
<p>Governor’s School in spite of weaker standardized test scores. Competitive candidates often rank in the top 5% of their</p><br>
<p>class and score above the 90th percentile on standardized tests. A student whose standardized test scores are below</p><br>
<p>the 90th percentile but rank among the best in this/her school may still apply if he or she is otherwise qualified.</p><br>
<p>Application deadlines are typically in early January, and application results are revealed in early April, as of 2017. More forms are sent to accepted students for scheduling purposes. Available electives for the year of 2008 included technology math, solar power, seismic engineering, and biomedical engineering. Students choose the elective courses from a list, which changes every year. Core classes are fairly involved and consume most of a student&#39;s academic time at GSET. The robotics course is centered on the construction of robots to accomplish certain tasks. Special emphasis is placed on creativity in design. For the year of 2008, there were two robotics competitions in line-following and robotic soccer. Other classes included physics, which stressed newer ideas, such as Relativity and String Theory, over the traditional mainstays of Kinematics and Newtonian Physics. "New Tech," taught by Blase Ur, stresses the importance of security and understanding in today&#39;s increasingly technology-oriented world. During the program, students are under the authority of Residential Teaching Assistants (RTAs), who are college students pursuing engineering fields.</p><br>
